English class 2 - lecture about CO2-emission

Wednesday the 7th of January, a man called Erik Appel told us about CO2 in the atmosphere. Though we have had many lectures about the issue and focused on the greenhouse effect, he was able to tell new facts we haven't heard before.
For example he told us, that the north pole contains an enormous amount of CO2, which is lying in air bubbles captured in the ice. If the north pole melts, all this CO2 will be emitted, which is THREE TIMES as much as we have emitted so far. In additon, the sea level will increase 6 metres. If we do not change our habbits drastically, there will be no more ice on the surface of the earth in the year 2020! Erik Appel also told about a project called (translated) "Thoughtful". The purpose of the project is to build an area with houses which are completely CO2-neutral. It's going to be difficult, but it's an important experiment which purpose is to find out what it take's to make completely CO2-neutral cities.

We look forward to seeing the development of the project.  And we look forward to CO2 - see you too.

  1. The story Erik Appel told you about the CO2 bubbles and that there won't be any more ice on the surface of the earth by the 2020, if we do not change our habits, sound both very worrying and even frightening. I hope that he is also exaggerating quite a bit otherwise it could be tragic.
